While most winters seem quite cold here. Mosquitoes can be active all year round along the coastal areas of Queensland. Likewise, fleas and ticks do not die during the winter and, instead, lay dormant waiting. Just a few random warm days can make your pet a parasite target, if he or she is not on a parasite preventative.
Intestinal Parasites
Intestinal parasites are around all year. This is particularly true if your pet goes outside its environment eg visiting boarding facilities, dog parks or is around other animals.
Fleas
Once you have seen one flea, then most likely there will be more. One flea can lay more than 50 eggs per-day, and by the time you notice that they are on your pet or in your home, chances are they have already laid more thousands of eggs.
Fleas do not always die during the winter, they simply become dormant. And they are alive and well in warmer areas such as your home or on other animals, despite the temperature outside. All it takes is a trip to a friend’s house with a pet that has fleas, and you have a problem also.

Heartworm
Heartworm protection is essential for your pet. Many owners who stop administering or miss a few doses in the winter do not adequately protect their pets. If your pet misses a dose or two, you risk allowing this deadly parasite to cause serious health problems. The yearly heartworm vaccination is a great way to make sure you never miss a beat with heartworm prevention.
Year-round pet parasite preventative should be use as just that – a year-round preventative. Allowing your pet to become infested with any parasite before treating is not an effective or economical option. Oftentimes treating pets with a serious parasite infestation is costly and may have side effects for your pets.
